Latte Macchiato

Latte macchiato is one of the most popular milk-based coffee drinks in Germany and across the European Union and is widely sold as a ready-to-drink chilled beverage. A typical latte macchiato such as Emmi CAFFÈ LATTE Macchiato consists mainly of milk, a portion of freshly brewed Arabica coffee and added sugar, resulting in the characteristic creamy texture and mild coffee flavor.[6][9] With an energy content of about 79 kcal per 100 ml and roughly 182 kcal per 230 ml cup, it falls into the medium calorie range for milk drinks and functionally behaves more like a small snack than just a beverage.[6][9] Due to the high milk content, latte macchiato also provides notable amounts of protein and fat, especially saturated fat, while dietary fiber is essentially absent.[6]

In terms of caffeine, latte macchiato is moderate compared with regular filter coffee: a typical recipe of around 50 ml espresso to 200–250 ml milk yields about 60–70 mg caffeine per serving, so a 230 ml cup will usually contain approximately 63 mg caffeine.[2][8] This clearly classifies latte macchiato as a caffeinated milk drink, yet it remains below many energy drinks in terms of caffeine load. Under the EU Nutrition Declaration rules, product labels must state standardized values per 100 ml – for example 79 kcal, 4.0 g fat, 2.4 g saturated fat, 7.9 g carbohydrates, 7.4 g sugars, 2.7 g protein and 0.07 g salt – and additionally per portion (here 230 ml), enabling consumers to judge the energy and sugar content of their habitual serving size more accurately.[6][9] Given the sugar content of around 17 g per cup and the share of saturated fat, latte macchiato is best regarded as an indulgent product to be enjoyed in moderation within an overall balanced diet.
